John Maus hasn’t toured in five years, and hasn’t released an album in even longer. While his fashion sense — oxford shirts — and manic, sweaty, high-energy stage presence hasn’t changed since then, he is now playing for the first time with a live band. Some may miss the “karoake” vibe of his old shows but I think it’s a definitely improvement. He played a few new songs, too, which stay in the general John Maus style (gothy synthpop). Can an album announcement be far away?

The Baby’s All Right show on Friday (8/18)was absolutely packed and had people watching from the front room as well (a rare show where they lowered the divider between the two rooms). Pictures from that show, including ones of opener Gary War, are in the gallery above.

Maus also play NJ’s WFMU Monty Hall the night before, and then hit MoMA PS1 Warm-UP on Saturday (8/19) with Daphni, Delia Gonzalez and more. (We’ll have pictures from that show soon.) He’ll be back in a couple weeks to play Hudson, NY’s Basilica Soundscape with Protomartyr, Priests, Zola Jesus and more.
