Julia Holter debuted songs from new LP in Mexico, covered Leonard Cohen in Spanish

Julia Holter hasn’t released a new studio album since 2015’s excellent Have You In My Wilderness, but it looks like that will change this year. She recently played her first show of 2018 at Ex-Convent of San Hipólito in Mexico City, which was also her first time playing Mexico City, and as promised, she debuted a handful of new songs. According to a review of the show on Filter Mexico, her next album is scheduled for the second half of 2018. We haven’t found any video of the new songs (yet?), but there is video of her covering Leonard Cohen’s “Take This Waltz” at the show. She’s done that cover before, only this time — given the location — she sang it in Spanish. Watch that video and see the setlist from the Mexico City show, below.

Julia was joined by Tashi Wada on synth at the show, and the next night, she joined him as a special guest at his own Mexico City show. Of her own show, she said, “thank you so much to everyone who came out to my first show in Mexico City. the love i felt from the audience is really what keeps me doing what i do and i appreciate it so much, it felt magical and i can’t wait to return.”

Julia also released a single for the Adult Swim Singles series earlier this year called “So Humble The Afternoon.” It’s a nice dose of minimal, ambient pop that’s closer to her earlier material than to Have You In My Wilderness. Listen below.

Julia’s next scheduled show is the 2018 End of the Road festival in the UK this summer. More dates possibly TBA.

Meanwhile, this pic with cute dogs may or may not also be a hint that she’s working on the new album:
