Julia Holter

Julia Holter was in NYC over the weekend when her tour hit Rough Trade for a sold-out show on Saturday (10/24). It was in support of her excellent new album Have You In My Wilderness, which she played most of, plus a few off Loud City Song and an updated arrangement of the older “Marienbad” which fit right in with the new stuff. For this show, she was joined by violist/singer Dina Maccabee, drummer Corey Fogel, bassist Devin Hoff (who also plays with Xiu Xiu and Nels Cline) and for a few songs saxophonist Danny Meyer who Julia said was a special guest for just that show. They sounded great, and had no trouble nailing all the different sides of Julia’s sound. Devin held down the jazz influences while Dina handled the classical side, and with Julia being her highly unique self, it all came together not sounding quite like anyone else.

For music that could rightly be considered very highbrow, Julia was just about as unpretentious as possible in between songs. She was cracking jokes and in a lighthearted spirit the whole night, whether it was about forgetting the chords to a song or telling us about a recent eye-rolling interview where the interviewer asked if she whistles while she’s alone (“Yeah like I’m just soo whimsical. Do you think he’d ask a man that? ‘Hey do you whistle while you’re alone… dude?’“). Between the humor and the great songs, she definitely had the crowd in the palm of her hand the whole night.

The show was opened by Motion Graphics, aka the new project of Joe Williams who you may remember as White Williams. More pictures (including one of Julia’s setlist) below…
