Julia Jacklin announces new LP & tour with Black Belt Eagle Scout, shares song

Julia Jacklin Crushing

Australia’s Julia Jacklin recently released the very good new song “Body,” which showed her inching away from the folky sound of her debut towards something more atmospheric. She also mentioned at the time that her new album would be out in early 2019, and now that album has officially been announced. It’s called Crushing, and it’s due out February 22 via Polyvinyl (pre-order).

Along with the announcement comes a second single, “Head Alone,” which sees Julia going in a similar indie rock direction to her band Phantastic Ferniture. It also sounds a bit like Burn Your Fire For No Witness-era Angel Olsen, and fans of that album should definitely check this out. Julia says the song is “a bit of a plea to those around me to give me space and a song to remind myself that’s it’s okay to enforce boundaries, the good people in your life will listen, adapt and still love you,” and that message comes through loud and clear. Its refrain of “Just say it till he understands: ‘you can love somebody without using your hands'” instantly sounds like an anthem for having your boundaries respected. We shouldn’t need a song like this, but as we see in the news everyday, we sadly do, and this one’s powerful message is matched by how quickly it gets stuck in your head. Listen to that and “Body,” and check out the tracklist, below. That’s the album artwork above.

Julia has also announced a 2019 tour with recent Saddle Creek signee Black Belt Eagle Scout (who recently re-released her great debut album Mother of My Children on her new label home), and that’s a very cool, well-matched pairing.

That tour lands in NYC on April 24 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (11/9) at noon. All dates are listed below.
