The penultimate show of the 2018 Ecstatic Music Festival at NYC’s Kaufman Center went down this past Thursday (4/19). The premise of these shows is usually to pair a “pop” musician with a “classical” musician (umbrella terms), and this one had ambient pop artist Julianna Barwick with the ModernMedieval vocal ensemble (which features former Anonymous 4 founder Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek and Roomful of Teeth’s Martha Cluver and Eliza Bagg).

The show began with ModernMedieval, who performed the world premieres of pieces by Caroline Shaw and Caleb Burhans, as well as 12th Century pieces by Hildegard Von Bingen, a 14th Century piece by Jehan Vaillant, and a 2010 piece by David Lang. Julianna Barwick then took the stage for a set of her own songs, and the show ended with both ModernMedieval and Julianna performing the world premiere of Barwick’s new work, “Adder.” Pictures are in the gallery above and the full setlist is below.

The next and final Ecstatic Music Fest show of 2018 is this Thursday (4/26) with Margaret Leng Tan, Suzanne Farrin, and Kelly Moran.
