Justin Peter Take Heart Take Care

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster releasing a new LP, touring (stream a track)

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster fronts Water Liars, is one half of Marie/Lepanto with Will Johnson (Centro-matic), and is also an active solo artist who plans to release his new album Take Heart, Take Care on August 30 via Fat Possum imprint Big Legal Mess Records. We’re premiering the folky, country-tinged title track, which Justin says this about:

I started writing ‘Take Heart, Take Care’ on a long drive from Reno to Eugene a couple years ago. I’d had the progression and melody in my head for a few years prior to that even, but was never able to come up with anything I thought suited it. As it happened, on that long drive it started raining pretty hard and the route I’d chosen was two-lane and dark and encroached upon by evergreens and rock walls on both sides. Things were getting a little white knuckle, and just then the first verse and the chorus showed up in damn near the form they appear on they record. I turned off the radio and kept repeating those two parts over and over in my head until I got into Eugene and stopped at a gas station to park and write it down. The last couple silent hours of the drive had done their work and from there the rest came pretty easily over the next few weeks as I recall. The first verse and chorus had announced their intentions pretty clearly so it was more or less a matter of trying my best to honor that intent. ‘Take Heart, Take Care’ has been a reliable counsel for me ever since and I hope it might do the same for anybody listening who maybe wants or needs to hear it.

Julien Baker has also long been a fan of Justin’s work, and she had this to say about his new album:

‘Take Heart, Take Care’ is a beautiful intersection of grit and tenderness. JPKS’ lyrics are immediately intimate; brutal enough to swear at you, but familiar enough to dispense gentle wisdom in its plainest form. This record is an appeal to the essentially human, a perfect balance of poetry and candor, full of soul-feeding truth and heart-breaking honesty.

Justin also has several tour dates coming up in support of the album from September through November, including a Brooklyn show on 9/19 at Alphaville. Tickets are on sale. All dates are listed below.
