Kacey Musgraves announces "trippy" new album 'Golden Hour'

Kacey Musgraves‘ last proper album is 2015’s awesome Pageant Material (last year she released a Christmas album), and she’s finally set to follow it with a new album called Golden Hour in early 2018. She revealed the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, and here’s an excerpt from the article with an idea of what to expect:

Musgraves describes her new LP as having a “trippy” twist, citing the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young as influences. And while she’s often celebrated for her clever wordplay and witty turns of phrase about small-town life, Musgraves says she avoided wrapping every lyric “up in a little bow” in favor of more direct, reflective songwriting.

“I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us,” she says of the album’s central theme. “None of the masks are solely us, but they’re all us. On this record, there’s the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that’s missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser — they’re all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole.”

Kacey also adds, “There’s no Auto-Tune, there’s no nothing,” and she revealed that she made the album with previous collaborators Luke Laird, Shane McAnally, and Natalie Hemby, plus brought in Ian Fitchuk and the Silver Seas’ Daniel Tashian as co-producers and co-writers. Stay tuned for music from the album and more info.

Kacey is playing The Ally Coalition’s fourth annual “Talent Show” at NYC’s Town Hall on January 24 with Lorde, The National, Spoon, Bleachers, Shamir and more. Tickets for that show just went on presale, and the public on-sale begins today (12/12) at 4 PM.

Kacey is also opening part of Harry Styles‘ tour, including his two shows at MSG on June 21 & 22 (tickets).
