Kamasi Washington in McCarren Park in June (more by Em Grey)

Kamasi Washington was recently interviewed for Pitchfork’s 5-10-15-20 series, where artists talk about their favorite albums from different parts of their lives in five-year intervals. Kamasi picked The Pink Panther Soundtrack at 5, N.W.A.‘s Straight Outta Compton at 10, John Coltrane‘s Transition at 15, Igor Stravinsky‘s The Rite of Spring at 20, Fela Kuti & Africa 70‘s Expensive Shit at 25, Thundercat‘s The Golden Age of Apocalypse at 30, and Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly (which Kamasi plays on) at 35. Read his commentary on each pick here.

Kamasi, who plays on St. Vincent’s new album and also has his new Harmony of Difference EP out now, is also currently on tour. He plays NYC on November 22 at Terminal 5 with special guest Robert Randolph (who has also been playing in Phil Lesh’s band this year) and opener Break Science. Tickets are still available, and we’re also giving away a pair on Facebook. A winner will be chosen at random and contacted with more details.
