Kelly Lee Owens covered Aaliyah on new 12" (listen), tells us about her favorite music of 2017
Welsh-born, London-based electronic artist Kelley Lee Owens released her self-titled debut earlier this year, a gorgeous, meditative melding of techno, pop and other influences. It’s shown up on many year-end lists and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you can listen to the extended version of the LP — that comes with three more songs — below. She also just released a new 12″ single featuring her awesome cover of Aaliyah’s “More Than a Woman” (that she played at her NYC live debut show this summer). You can stream that below as well.
We asked Kelly what her favorite records of the year are and she sent us her 2017 Top 10, including records from Syd, Four Tet, Sevdaliza, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bjork, Talaboman, and more. Check out the full list, complete with commentary from Kelly, below.

An amazing & underrated independent artist. Her voice is incredible & I’m in to the production on the album & the way it allows for space.
Four Tet – New Energy
Just an incredible mix of organic recordings / samples & beats. Two Thousand And Seventeen from this record is one my favourite tracks to have come out this year.
Talaboman – The Night Land
Two of the best producers/ DJ’s John Talabot & Axel Boman coming together to create an incredible album.
Differ-Ent – It’s Good To Be Differ-Ent
There are SO many amazing moments & sounds on this album!! So many bangers !!!!!
Bjork – Utopia
This album literally “blisses me” – we all have our idea of what Utopia is & this record is that & hope personified.
Visible Cloaks – Reassemblage
So many weird, amazing sounds / production on this album. I’d never listened to anything by them before this album & now i’m a bit obsessed.
Syd – Fin
One of the best new R&B albums to have been put out in recent years.
Lindstrom / Jenny Hval – “Bungl (Like a Ghost)”
I’ve loved most of the stuff Lind. has put out, combining his production with Jenny’s always incredible vocals is genius.
Mount Kimbie – Love What Survives
I toured with these guys this year & the way this album comes across live is incredible. Live drums & a Peter Hook esc. bassline + shit loads of analogue synths really makes the record come alive.
Ryuichi Sakamoto – Async
Beautiful ambience & as always incredible piano!
