Kevin Morby began solo tour in Brooklyn, covering Springsteen at Woolworth Bldg

Kevin Morby kicked off a solo tour at the Industry City courtyard in Brooklyn last night, part of the Bell House’s new summer series in Sunset Park. As Kevin pointed out during his set, the weather was beautiful for an outdoor show, and the beer garden-like industrial courtyard setting between buildings makes for a fun place to be. Though it was a solo set, Kevin was joined by a sax player for a few songs at the beginning, during which Kevin was singing and playing a piano. It was just Kevin and his guitar and harmonica for the rest of the show, though we also got the first-ever live Kevin Morby loop pedal usage for a version of “Harlem River.” As the crowd’s cheers proved, the experiment was a huge success! (Video below.) In addition to his own songs, Kevin also covered Townes Van Zandt and Silver Jews. Cut Worms played a solo set to open the night.

Kevin’s solo tour of the Northeast includes another NYC show which looks like it will be pretty special: he’ll be covering Bruce Springsteen songs on June 22 at The Woolworth Tower Residencies. The event, presented by Atlas Obscura in partnership with Sotheby’s, includes a viewing of Springsteen’s draft of “Born to Run,” as well as a conversation between Executive Editor of Pitchfork Mark Richardson and music writer Amanda Petrusich about Bruce Springsteen’s creative process. This is in an apartment on the 40th floor of the Woolworth Building in downtown Manhattan, and “guests are invited to take off their shoes, sit on the bed, or curl up on the floor, and recall the first time they heard the iconic Born To Run record.” Tickets ($125) are on sale now and more info is here.

All Kevin Morby tour dates are listed below. The Bell House summer series at Industry City also has upcoming shows by Guided By Voices, Soul Rebels, Kevin Devine, Luna, and more.
