Kim Shattuck of The Muffs, rest in peace

Kim playing with the Pixies, 2013 (more by Dana “Distortion” Yavin)

Very sad news. Kim Shattuck, who fronted alt-rock/punk band The Muffs, has died at age 56. Her husband posted today on his instagram that Kim passed away in her sleep after a two-year battle with ALS.

While best known for leading The Muffs, who formed in 1991 and have a new album due out this month, Kim also spent time in The Pandoras, The Beards, briefly played bass in the Pixies, and other groups. Kim recently formed The Coolies with Palmyra Delran (The Friggs), and former Muff Melanie Vammen, having made an EP with proceeds going to ALS research.

Rest in peace, Kim. Your music lives on.

Update: Several artists have paid tribute to Kim Shattuck.
