King Khan & the Shrines @ LPR 6/6/2014
King Khan & the Shrines spent the weekend in NYC, playing Le Poisson Rouge on Friday (6/6) and Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday (6/7), part of their tour with fellow Canadians Red Mass. Pics from LPR are in this post.
Khan’s voice sounded a little shot on Saturday but he and the band were in typically good spirits. The Shrines are one of those bands whose jobs it is to “have a good time” and to exalt the King. Keyboardist Fred Fredovitch had his enormous organ (ahem) in crowd by the second song. It’s schtick, but it’s good schtick, and they’re killer musicians with good songs at the base. Great songs, even, like “Bite My Tongue” and “Land of the Freak,” “I Wanna Be a Girl” and “Born to Die” from last year’s Idle No More.” Check out the full setlist from LPR below.
Openers Red Mass were good too and, like The Shrines, mix genres. But where King Khan imagines a Motown that would’ve signed The Stooges, Roy of Red Mass doesn’t have quite as singular a vision. Some songs were straight-up garage punk, others had an almost disco backbeat that would’ve been at home in 2005. They were all pretty good though. (Their drummer is crazy good.) Not sure why they came out in hoods and animal masks only to almost immediately discard them, something it doesn’t look like they did at the LPR show. Also: at MHOW, the band brought out Rick Froberg (Obits/Hot Snakes) for the song he sings on for Red Mass’ new album due out later this year.
Both King Khan and Red Mass play again tonight (6/8) at NJ’s Asbury Lanes. You can also catch Red Mass on Monday (6/9) at The Flat with Foster Care and Atlanta’s Dasher.
