Kurt Vile covered Rolling Stones, adds dates; J Mascis on new Sad Planets song

Kurt Vile has released a Spotify Singles session, featuring a shorter, acoustic, and harmonica-aided version of “Loading Zones” off 2018’s great Bottle It In, and a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ jangly acoustic Beggars Banquet song “No Expectations.” It’s not the most obvious Stones song to cover, but it’s a perfect fit for Kurt Vile. Kurt doesn’t change it much, but still manages to make it sound like it could be a KV original. Listen to both songs below.

Kurt has also once again expanded his tour. In addition to his previously announced SummerStage at Central Park show (7/25) with the great support bill of both Dinosaur Jr and Cate Le Bon, he has other Northeast shows with Dino Jr and Cate separately, and a Connecticut show with Dino Jr’s J Mascis. Updated dates are listed below. Tickets for the Central Park show go on various presales today (4/17) at noon.

Speaking of J Mascis, he lends his lead guitar duties to the new song “Just Landed” by Sad Planets, the collaborative project of Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and John Petkovic (who plays with Mascis in Sweet Apple and has also played in Cobra Verde, Guided by Voices, and more). The song will be on Sad Planets’ debut album Akron, Ohio, which drops this Friday. Listen and watch the video below.

And speaking of both J Mascis and classic rock covers, J recently released a Tom Petty cover.
