PREVIOUSLY:

It was a perfect evening Thursday night in NYC, making the mellow sounds of Kurt Vile & The Violators all the sweeter. Kurt and the band are on tour surrounding their appearance at Pitchfork fest last weekend (his set got rained out though), and SummerStage in Central Park was all good vibes with the sun setting just as the band took the stage. Never really one for stage banter, Kurt let the songs do the talking, including “Wakin’ on a Pretty Day,” “Pretty Pimpin,” “Loading Zones” and a night-closing rendition of his cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Downbound Train.” Setlist is below.

It was a killer night all-around, with Kurt’s buddies Dinosaur Jr. providing direct support. “We haven’t played in nine months,” Lou Barlow told the crowd. “The secret is we haven’t practiced. I think it’s going pretty good so far.” Maybe it was just them playing in daylight, but I’ve never seen the Dinosaur Jr stage this purple, and they had stuffed monsters from the album covers of Where You Been? and Farm on stage by Murph’s drum kit (which had the sun image from their debut album on the kick drum). Their set included classics like “Start Choppin,” “Little Furry Things,” “Out There” and “The Wagon” (where they were augmented by a second drummer and guitarist).

There weren’t a whole lot of people at Rumsey Playfield when Cate Le Bon started her set at 5:45 PM but she and her band (which featured two saxophones at times) sounded great, sticking mainly to Kate’s new album, Reward (which was nominated for the Mercury Prize that same day).  Cate noted that this was the last show of “a very long tour.” You can check out pics from her set, and the whole night at SummerStage in Central Park, below.

Kurt and Dinosaur Jr play together again on Sunday (7/28) in Northampton, MA, and Kurt’s tour continues on through next weekend. Dinosaur Jr host the Camp Fuzz rock camp next week and will be on tour this fall with Steve Gunn and Easy Action. Lou Barlow brings his other band Sebadoh to NYC’s Bowery Ballroom tonight with Eleanor Friedberger.
