L Mag picks 2014 edition of “8 Bands You Need to Hear”
by Bill Pearis
It’s springtime, ramps are at the greenmarket, cherry trees are in bloom and The L Magazine has published it’s annual list of “8 Band You Need to Hear.” This year, they are positing it as a rebuttal to claims that the Brooklyn scene is dead now that 285 Kent is closed:
When the beloved underground venue 285 Kent closed in January, a bunch of thinkpieces took stock of the local music scene. Some pronounced the club’s final night the end of Brooklyn as the country’s (and continent’s) music hub… Toronto, Philly and San Francisco–even Columbus, for crying out loud–might all be producing lots of new and exciting bands, but we’ll be damned if New York hasn’t churned out the most consistently vibrant (and weird) records and live shows in the last 15 years. Here are eight bands helping to keep it that way.
We’re not sure anyone has actually said that ever but, whatever their excuse, this year’s list is, as usual, a mix of bands you may have heard, you may have heard of, and perhaps some you haven’t. They are:
Slothrust (May 6, Bowery Ballroom opening for Ben Kweller)
Yvette (June 15, Warsaw with Fuck Buttons)
Porches (May 17, Shea Stadium)
Teen Girl Scientist Monthly (May 23, Cameo)
Read more about all eight bands over at The L. Maybe you caught Slothrust at Rough Trade’s Record Store Day extravaganza. What do you think of this year’s list?
