Greta Gerwig’s delightful coming-of-age film Lady Bird has been winning hearts, topping critics polls and breaking Rotten Tomatoes records since its release just over a month ago. Music plays a big part in the life of Lady Bird‘s titular character (played by Saoirse Ronan who hosted SNL this weekend) and while I spotted a Bikini Kill sticker on her bedroom wall, she and her best friend Julie are also really, really into “Crash Into Me.” The 1996 release was a big deal for people who graduated high school in the early 2000s (and maybe still is???) It certainly was for Gerwig, as she explained on Late Night With Seth Meyers, she wrote Matthews a personal letter asking for use of his song in her film, admitting:

I love your music. Your albums were my first CD purchases…I would turn off all the lights in my room and lay on the floor and play Before These Crowded Streets on a loop and imagine what it would be like to be in love, to go on a road trip, to have wild adventures, to create art, to be a person in the world.

Gerwig goes on to call “Crash Into Me” “the most romantic song ever.” Matthews, who described “Crash Into Me” on a 1999 episode of VH1’s Storytellers as being about “a bit of a crazy man,” and “the kind of person you’d call the police on,” might not agree.

Over ten years after the timeframe of Lady Bird, Dave Matthews is headlining “A Concert for Island Relief” at Radio City Music Hall on January 6, 2018. Hurray for the Riff Raff, whose excellent 2017 release The Navigator has so far made Uncut’s and Mojo’s top albums of the year lists, is on the lineup as well, along with Trey Anastasio Band and Aaron Neville. Proceeds from the show go to hurricane relief efforts in the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and mainland US. Tickets go on sale Friday, December 8 at noon, and a Dave Matthews Band fan presale begins Tuesday, December 5 at 9 AM.
