Lady Wray (of Lady) releasing solo debut, playing Brooklyn Bazaar with The Shacks

Nicole Wray was one half of neo-classic duo Lady who released a terrific debut album in 2013, and before that she was an in-demand vocalist, having sung on records by Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Playa, Timbaland and more. Lady didn’t make it much past that debut LP, but Nicole kept the name, and is now doing it solo as Lady Wray. She’ll release terrific new single “Smiling” via Big Crown this week, a vintage sounding soul nugget that is a great showcase for her powerful pipes. That, and previous 45 “Do it Again” are both from Lady Wray’s debut album Queen Alone which is out September 23. Stream those singles and another Lady Wray cut below.

Lady Wray will celebrate her new album’s release at Brooklyn Bazaar on September 29, where she’ll be backed by El Michels Affair, and the night also features fellow Big Crown act The Shacks, as well as 79.5. Those vintage sounds will fit right in with the kitschy retro vibe of Brooklyn Bazaar’s new location, which opens this weekend. Tickets are on sale now.
