Rick Alverson has directed films such as the Tim Heidecker-starring The Comedy and the Neil Hamburger-starring Entertainment; directed music videos for Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Strand of Oaks, and others; he also played in the Jagjaguwar-signed 2000s-era band Spokane. He now has another musical project, Lean Year, a collaboration with singer Emilie Rex. They’re releasing their self-titled debut album on Friday (10/20) via Western Vinyl (pre-order), and we’re premiering “Waterloo Suns” from it. The duo cite cult folk singers such as Karen Dalton and Fred Neil among their influences, as well as ambient pioneer Brian Eno, and those two sounds collide wonderfully on “Waterloo Suns.” It’s a modern, atmospheric take on ’60s folk, and it sounds very pretty. Listen below.

Lean Year also have some shows coming up in the Northeast surrounding the album’s release, including Brooklyn’s Alphaville on 10/27 (tickets). All dates are listed below.

Lean Year — 2017 Tour Dates
10/25: Richmond, VA – Black Iris *
