Left Banke singer Steve Martin Caro, RIP

Steve Martin Caro, singer for ’60s baroque pop group The Left Banke, died on Tuesday at age 71. The news was broken on the band’s Facebook: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Steve has passed away last night. Another great voice has been taken away too early. We will all miss him and all that he gave to the Left Banke. Say hi to George and Mike for me……I will always remember our talks at Rubott.”

Martin Caro’s breathy voice was one of The Left Banke’s signature elements, and he co-wrote some of the group’s best songs, including “I Haven’t Got the Nerve,” which The Folk Implosion sampled for “Natural One,” “I’ve Got Something on My Mind” (which Jens Lekman sampled for “Black Cab“), “She May Call You Up Tonight,” “Shadows Breaking Over My Head,” and “Dark is the Bark.” Rest in peace, Steve.
