Lido Pimienta’s ‘La Papessa’ wins 2017 Polaris Music Prize

Lido Pimienta‘s La Papessa won the 2017 Polars Music Prize, an underdog win, beating out the late Leonard Cohen’s You Want it Darker, Feist‘s Pleasure, Weaves’ self titled debut, record by BADBADNOTGOOD, Tanya Tagaq, Leif Vollebekk, and others. The award, which was voted on by an 11-member jury, was given out at the gala ceremony in Toronto tonight, that was livestreamed. “Perhaps the only thing I can say is I hope that the Aryan specimen who told me to go back to my own country two weeks after I arrived in London, Ont., Canada, is watching this,” she said in her politically charged acceptance speech, adding “This album honors my brother who passed away in 2013.” You can stream the album below.

The gala featured performances from most of the nominees and you can watch an archive of the livestream below as well.
