listen to The Dodos cover American Football’s “Never Meant”

The Dodos at Webster Hall in 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

As you may know, Polyvinyl Records is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a compilation of Polyvinyl bands covering other Polyvinyl bands. We already posted Beach Slang covering Japandroids, Owen covering Rainer Maria, and Deerhoof covering Xiu Xiu (in the style of White Reaper), and here’s The Dodos covering American Football‘s “Never Meant.” The Dodos stick to their rhythmic pop style, while keeping the melody of the original intact. It works, as you can hear for yourself:

American Football are releasing their first album in 17 years and then playing shows, including a huge NYC show at Terminal 5 in January. Before that, American Football members Mike and Nate Kinsella are on tour together with their respective solo projects, Owen and Birthmark. That tour hits Rough Trade NYC tonight (9/16) (tickets). On that comp, not only does Owen cover Rainer Maria, but Rainer Maria cover Birthmark.
