LUH made their NYC debut at Mercury Lounge (pics)

Ahead of their set at Pitchfork Festival, Amsterdam’s LUH (Lost Under Heaven) played a BrooklynVegan-presented NYC show at Mercury Lounge on Friday (7/15). It was their first show here since releasing their great debut album Spiritual Songs for Lovers to Sing on Mute this past May. The show was a little underwhelming compared to the album. It felt like they needed a larger, tighter band (or at least a bass player) to match how fleshed-out the album sounds. And maybe the dark Mercury Lounge just wasn’t the ideal location for a band with such a lively sound. Still, they haven’t played many shows yet so a little roughness is probably to be expected, and it was still nice to see Ellery James Robert and Eborny Hoorn sing these great songs in person. Ellery is a pretty seasoned performer, having fronted WU LYF at the beginning of this decade, and he looked and sounded great up there. He’s got a voice that really isn’t like many other people, and it sounds as sharp live as it does on record.
