Lume releasing LP on Equal Vision ft. mems of O'Brother & Big Jesus (video)

Chicago’s Lume are following 2016’s Perennial Phase with their first album for Equal Vision, Wrung Out, on April 20 via their new label home (pre-order). The album was produced by Mike Watts (who worked on the latest Glassjaw and Dillinger Escape Plan records), and it features contributions from O’Brother guitarist Johnny Dang and Big Jesus vocalist/bassist Spencer Ussery. Like O’Brother and Big Jesus, Lume pull from ’90s grunge as much as they pull from the ’00s post-hardcore of bands like Brand New and Thrice, and they’ve got a Hum-ish atmospheric side in the mix too. We’re premiering the new song “Loss Leader,” along with its video, and here’s what Lume tell us about it:

I wrote the base riff for “Loss Leader” in the back of our van on an acoustic guitar during our west coast tour in early 2017. Somewhere along the way it went from being a pretty subdued song, to being one of our more huge-sounding tracks with the help of some guest slide guitar by our good friend Johnny Dang of O’Brother and some input from our producer, Mike Watts.

Lyrically the song revolves around how we process the current social/political climate. I don’t generally write about things like that, but we had several conversations over long drives in the van about how with social media and the internet in general, it’s easy to end up trapped in a feedback loop. You surround yourself only with people who share identical views, and often, people’s views are shaped by news that’s only digested from a headline or a status update, then spread around endlessly without hearing the whole story.
