Lycus streaming new album ‘Chasms’ (listen)

by Rob Sperry-Fromm

Lycus - Chasms

Bay area funeral doom band Lycus have released their new full-length, which is called Chasms, and is out now via Relapse. Chasms is a very strong record. Lycus tinge their heavy, slow doom with a lot of elements that end up making them sound more diverse sonically than other funeral bands. In fact, the mix is downright airy for an album like this, with clean guitars chiming in by the end of the first song right alongside crunching low-end, choral backing vocals and guttural howls. The rest of the album is similarly emotional and varied (at least for funeral doom). It’s got masterful production, courtesy of Jack Shirley (who works with Deafheaven, Loma Prieta, Bosse-de-Nage, and more), and if you couldn’t tell by looking at it, the artwork was done by Paolo Girardi (whose covers usually look like that).

No word yet on tour dates, but in the meantime you can stream Chasms below…
