Mac DeMarco, Father John Misty & Ariel Pink form The Puberty 3

Mac DeMarco, Father John Misty’s Josh Tillman and Ariel Pink have formed a new group, dubbing themselves The Puberty 3. “The three of us have a standing dinner date at this Silver Lake Thai place,” Ariel says of the group’s origins, “and, and a couple months ago we were there and Josh started humming this amazing melody, and then Mac joined in on chopsticks. Then I went to the bathroom. When I came back, they’d written the whole thing. When I suggested we call it ‘Night Market Song’ it became clear we were onto something. Also nobody has ever really done this before, so how could we not?”

As for the name, Pink says they bandied about a few different ones – The Thai Guys almost stuck  — when Mac hit upon the winner. “It just came to me,” DeMarco says. “I have no idea where from, but, boy, genius strikes at the strangest times. In my case, on the john. Like my new album…I’m just good at naming stuff.” He adds that once he told Ariel and Josh the name, they all found that they’d often felt as if they were still in puberty. “I think Josh meant it more, you know, spiritually or something but I was talking about how I still can’t grow a beard.”

While they have yet to release a record, they’ve got lots of songs and ideas. “I’ve got quite a few songs, including an epic treatise on the ascot and why I’m bringing it back,” says Tillman. “Mac has played us some demos, including many where the rhythm track is all sampled burps. You wouldn’t think it would work, but that’s the magic of The Puberty 3.”

The Puberty 3 are planning a tour just as soon as Mac’s new album cycle ends. “Great ideas and collaborations like this shouldn’t be rushed,” says Pink. “Though I told them, if you wanna do it sooner, I’m free now.”

When asked about the similarities to the title of Mitski’s acclaimed 2016 album Puberty 2, a rep for the group said none of the members were familiar with the Mitski album beforehand, and any similarities to it were merely coincidental. Mac added, “Misty? He didn’t even release an album in 2016!”
