Mac DeMarco, Thieves Like Us and Dignan Porch @ Captured Tracks CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg (pics)

Mac DeMarco / Thieves Like Us @ MHOW, 10/24/2012
Mac DeMarco was one of this year’s CMJ’s more entertaining players, his shows a mix of solid musicianship, and gleefully anarchic humor. No place was this more on display than the Captured Tracks official CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday (10/18) where he made jokes about his anatomy, flung himself into the crowd and made out with a (random?) girl near the stage. And some great songs too (his Mac DeMarco II had come out that week), with a backing band that could actually, y’know, play.
Less of an impression was made with the two previous bands. Dance outfit Thieves Like Us had it together but mostly lacked that certain something to make it special, though “Drugs in My Body” sounded great and the’ve come a long way from when I saw them open for New Young Pony Club in 2006. Openers Dignan Porch, making their first trip from the UK, were fine but not the most engaging live act.
