Makaya McCraven shares song from Gil Scott-Heron reimagining LP

Modern day jazz great Makaya McCraven is releasing We’re New Again, a reimagining of the late, legendary Gil Scott-Heron‘s final album I’m New Here, on February 7 via XL (who also released the original album in 2010 and Jamie xx’s rework of the album in 2011). The first piece of music to be released from it is “Where Did The Night Go,” which is a much busier-sounding song than the original and features a sample from the Stephen McCraven Quartet’s ‘Silhouette of Eric.’

Makaya also has upcoming tour dates, including two shows at NYC’s Winter Jazzfest this weekend, one of which is a Gil Scott-Heron tribute.

He’ll also perform at his usual record label International Anthem’s unofficial Winter Jazzfest side show at Public Records on Thursday (1/9). He’s drumming in bassist Junius Paul’s trio at that show (which also features trumpeter Marquis Hill), and that show also includes the Brandee Younger Trio (w/ Dezron Douglas and Russell Carter) and DJ sets by Total Refreshment Centre director Lexus Blondin and International Anthem co-founder Scottie Mcniece, and Vocalo radio’s Ayana Contreras, plus more unannounced guests. International Anthem will also be selling theirr full catalog at this show, and not at any other WJF show. Tickets are on sale.

Makaya McCraven and Marquis Hill both play on Junius Paul’s 2019 album Ism, and you can stream that below.

International Anthem artist Jaimie Branch also performs several times throughout WJF, including one show as a bandleader on Friday (1/10) at The Dance.
