Make Music NY happens on Sunday with free live music events all over the city (full schedule)

Make Music NY is back for an ninth year, celebrating the spirit of live music all over NYC on Sunday, June 21. In addition to many acts playing on street-corners, parks and other public locations, as usual, there are a number of special events, all of which are free:

Street Studios: Twelve small mobile recording studios will appear on sidewalks throughout NYC, each run by a team of two DJ-engineers. These producers will spend three hours (11am-2pm) recording, quick-mixing, looping, and playing back the live sounds, while interacting with the public who stop by to sing, play an instrument, or record sounds that become part of the musical track. They’ll then spend the rest of the day mixing and finishing the track so it can be played at the “Street Studio Smackdown” party at the DUMBO Spot in Brooklyn.

Mass Appeal: Performances across the city all involving a single instrument — Accordions, Cellos, Gongs, Guitars, Theremins (!), Ukuleles among them — and if you can play, you can play. Download the sheet music, show up and join the band.

Punk Island: One hundred punk bands from all over the world, playing across seven stages on a pier in Staten Island.

Concerto for Buildings: “MMNY will shut down Greene Street in SoHo, where eight buildings have hollow, cast-iron facades that resonate when struck, for a 30-minute Concerto for Buildings, a new work for full orchestra and 24 percussionists using the buildings as instruments, with four separate movements by four composers: Paula Matthusen (winner of the 2014-2015 Rome Prize), Scott Wollshleger, Daniel Goode, and Elijah Valongo (a student-composer in Face The Music).”

Exquisite Corpses: Using the double meaning of the phrase, this is both the rotating art method when one musician will take over where the last left off, but it will also be happening in six of NYC’s burial grounds.

Sousapalooza!: Hundreds of brass, wind, and percussion players will pay tribute to The March King himself, John Philip Sousa, along with other march classics in Bryant Park.

Pop-Up Musicals: Some of the most beloved musicals of all time will be spontaneously performed in seven of Manhattan’s most iconic parks.

Porch Stomp: 40 bluegrass, country and folk acts will perform on Governors Island’s Nolan Park, and you’re welcome to bring an instrument and join in.

There’s lots more too. Check out the full Make Music NY 2015 schedule.
