Megan Jean and the KFB releasing new LP, touring (stream "Hegemon")
Megan Jean and the KFB have a sound that can’t easily be pinned down. It’s got bits of rock, folk, soul, funk, bluegrass, gypsy (for lack of a better term), and more. Megan often plays washboard, she herself has called the band “a metal band, if it was 1927,” and they’ve done full sets of jazz covers of Nirvana songs. That should give you an idea of how all over the place they are, yet even that list of traits can’t fully describe Megan Jean and the KFB’s sound.
They’re releasing a new album, Tarantistas, on August 4 via Alo Records (pre-order), and the recently-released lead single “Playground Queen” sees them in funky, upbeat mode, while second single “Hegemon,” which premieres in this post, is a much more somber dose of folky piano pop. And, while Megan Jean’s sound can sometimes be rough around the edges, “Hegemon” is a gorgeous song. Listen and watch the video for “Playground Queen” below.
As mentioned, Megan Jean and the KFB are playing the awesome Muddy Roots Festival in Tennessee later this summer (which has a very diverse lineup including Sleep, X, High on Fire, Dead Boys, Fu Manchu, Meat Puppets, Oxbow, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, and more), and they’ll also be touring before and after that. They’ve got an album release show in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 (8/4) the day the album comes out. They’re opening for Mike O’Malley & The Beastie Band at that show, and tickets are on sale.
