Melvins announce LP & tour with 2 bassists (from Butthole Surfers & Redd Kross)

Melvins

The Melvins really love to experiment with bassists. In 2016, they made an album called Basses Loaded with six different bassists across 12 tracks, including Steve McDonald of Redd Kross and Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfers. Last year, they made their first album with Steve McDonald handling all the bass, A Walk with Love and Death. Now, they’ve got both McDonald and Pinkus putting their talents together for a Melvins album with two bassists on every song. It’s called Pinkus Abortion Technician, named of course for Pinkus himself and the Butthole Surfers’ 1987 album Locust Abortion Technician. It drops on April 20 via Ipecac Recordings.

Of the decision to have two bassists, Dale Crover said, “With our upcoming release, we double your bass player with Steven McDonald AND Jeff Pinkus holding down the bottom. It’s an experiment in the low end of the aural spectrum where we asked ourselves, ‘would it work?’ ‘could it work??’ ‘should it work???’ The answers were yes, yes and YES!”

The album includes “Stop Moving To Florida,” a medley of the James Gang’s “Stop” and the Butthole Surfers’ “Moving To Florida,” plus covers of The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Had” and the Butthole Surfers’ “Graveyard.” No music is out from the album yet but you can check out the artwork and tracklist below.

Dale Crover, Buzz Osborne, Steve McDonald and Jeff Pinkus will also be taking their double bass attack on the road from late April through mid-August. The tour includes a Brooklyn show on May 11 at Warsaw. Tickets for that show (and the rest of the tour) go on sale Friday (2/16) at 10 AM local time. All dates are listed below.
