Melvins releasing new LP with 6 different bassists (stream a track)

Melvins Basses Loaded

The Melvins, as always, are extremely busy. In addition to touring with Napalm Death and Melt Banana, finishing and releasing a lost album with Mike Kunka, and prepping a new tour 10″, they’ve announced yet another upcoming release. This one is called Basses Loaded and it comes out June 3 via Ipecac. They’ve shared the first track from the album, which is called “Hideous Woman” and features Steve McDonald of Redd Kross on bass. You can listen to that below.

The album title, a nod to King Buzzo’s baseball fandom, is also a reference to the fact that the album features six different bassists. The bass contributions for their live show seems to be ever-shifting, so this makes a certain amount of sense. The six bassists, in addition to Mcdonald, are Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, Trevor Dunn (the stand-up bassist of Fantomas whose presence constitutes Melvins Lite), Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfers, Jared Warren of Big Business, and drummer Dale Crover, who originally played bass for the Melvins way back in 1983.

The McDonald-featuring songs, “War Pussy” and “The Decay of Lying,” are also on that tour 10″, and other tracks such as “Beer Hippy” and “Captain Comedown” have appeared on past Melvins releases. The album also includes a cover of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” because of course it does.

Buzz Osbourne also talked to Rolling Stone about the new album, sharing a very interesting alternate-history of the celebrity-fronted Nirvana reunions of recent years and throwing some serious shade at Dave Grohl.

We had recorded a little bit with Krist Novoselic. And that was a really, really funny story. It was before where [the surviving members of Nirvana] played with Paul McCartney. Dave Grohl had said that he wanted to do all that stuff with us. He wanted to do Nirvana songs with the Melvins, and maybe have David Yow singing. So Krist Novoselic came down and we started rehearsing, and Dave was supposed to show up — and he just never showed up. Blew it off, totally. And it was his idea! I didn’t appreciate that, you know? I’m a lot of things, but one thing I’m not doing is sitting next to the phone in curlers, waiting for Dave Grohl to call me, you know? When he totally blows you off like that, it’s fucked. But whatever. There’s nothing I can do about that. So we did some recording with Krist while he was here.

The interview, like most Buzz interviews, is well worth a read (he also has some choice words for White Zombie, among others).

The Napalm Death/Melt Banana tour hits NYC for two shows at MHOW on April 14 and Webster Hall on April 15. MHOW is sold out, but tickets for Webster are still available.
