Merasi: Master Musicians of Rajasthan going on rare U.S. tour (2 NYC shows)

Merasi musicians at Jaisalmer Fort, a World Heritage Site, in Rajasthan.

Folk Arts Rajasthan, a small New York City based non-profit, works hard to support and promote the culture of the Merasi, a marginalized community residing in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Through extraordinary effort, the organization has brought a small group of Merasi musicians to the United States for a tour of the Northeast.  The tour includes two nights at NYC’s Baryshnikov Arts Center on October 6 & 7. Tickets are on sale now.

The Merasi (meaning “keeper of stories”) nurture and impart a legacy spanning generations through their performances. Their music traverses traditional folk and Sufi songs as well as sacred Hindu bhajans and Qawwalis. Think of the collaboration between Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Shye Ben Tzur and the Rajasthan Express featured in the Paul Thomas Anderson’s music documentary Junun (but without the guitars and electronic elements).

All tour dates are listed, along with a tour preview video, below.
