Merge signs mysterious band Jade Hairpins (listen)

Jade Hairpins Merge

Merge Records has signed a new artist named Jade Hairpins. There’s no Google history of the band’s existence, no photo, and their vague bio reads “Jade Hairpins are hiding quietly in a tall grove, softly whisking away the mask of dew and doubt, thrilling the needed speakable truths of equality and peace into four beats and cascading melody on their debut. The shapes and names of a world appear,” so it seems very likely that this is a mysterious project from known musicians. That seems even more likely when you listen to their new song “Mother Man,” which sounds way too professional to be from an unknown newcomer. It’s a synthpop/post-punk jam that sounds more than a little influenced by David Byrne, David Bowie, and James Murphy. If we had to guess, maybe someone from Merge-signed band Ought is involved? What do you think?

Update: As a commenter pointed out, there’s a song on a recent Fucked Up 7″ credited to Jade Hairpins.

The song will appear on the band’s debut 12,” backed by “Gracefully.” That comes out October 5. Listen to the song below:
