Metallica, Ryan Adams, and U2 paid tribute to Chris Cornell (watch)

In the days since Chris Cornell’s tragic death, fellow artists have paid tribute via social media and by covering his songs. At an Aukland, New Zealand show on Saturday (5/20), Ryan Adams did a cover of “Black Hole Sun.” Metallica’s Robert Trujillo worked that same song into his bass solo during the band’s Boston show at Gillette Stadium. While U2 didn’t cover “Black Hole Sun” themselves, it did play over the stadium speakers before they took the stage at their Rose Bowl show in LA on Saturday. U2 also dedicated “Running to Stand Still” to Cornell. Watch video of all that below.

Pearl Jam has been quiet since news of Cornell’s death came out, but they did break their social media silence to share a picture of a young Cornell with his dog.

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready also spoke with Seattle Times about Cornell:

“Chris means a lot to me today, as he trusted me to play on Temple,” McCready said Thursday. “He handed me a dream in getting to actually play on beautiful songs. Informed how I would play on Pearl Jam records in the future, I believe. Gave me the break into the music business I’d wanted since I was 11.
“He was a friend I will miss. I miss you, brother.”

Megadeth, Heart’s Ann Wilson, Josh Klinghoffer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Umphrey’s McGee are among those who also recently covered songs by Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Cornell’s solo work. Night one of Rock on the Range, a festival Soundgarden was supposed to headline, saw artists paying homage to Cornell’s work, as well.
