Micachu & The Shapes played Le Poisson Rouge (pics, setlist, video), now on tour with Spoon

“Different styles jutted up against each other constantly; distorted electronica met straight-up skiffle, grime beats propelled pop melodies. This diverse sound was also recorded in a determinedly homespun fashion; guitar lines were played out on Levi’s homemade six-string instrument known as “the Chu”, while each song was filled with found samples, from the sound of smashing glass to the infamous vacuum cleaner whose wheezing was sampled for the track Turn Me Well (said vacuum cleaner also occasionally made its way into the band’s live set).” [Guardian]

Micachu & the Shapes replace The Strange Boys (who opened at Radio City) as first of third opener on the Spoon/Deerhunter tour in Chicago tonight (4/1). On Tuesday (3/30), the talented UK trio led by Mica Levi made a pit stop in NYC. They played a packed early show at West Village club Le Poisson Rouge to a crowd that was full of British accents. NYC’s Tanlines opened (though I missed them). Flying Lotus played a sold out show at the same venue later that night (which I was tempted to stay for, but I headed to the Lucero show in Williamsburg instead) (there was probably time to do all three actually).

Though the hour long show was never boring, due in small part to Micachu’s occasional witty banter (and her own heavy accent), there were multiple moments in the hour long show that really had the crowd roaring and dancing, like during “Golden Phone” and the explosive “Wrong”. Instruments ranged from laptop to wine bottles. There was one encore and at least twelve songs played. The written setlist, more pictures from the show and some videos below…
