Michael Kiwanuka announces new album, shares “You Ain’t The Problem”
It’s been three years since Michael Kiwanuka released his great sophomore album Love & Hate (2016), and the album has only increased in relevance since then thanks to standout track “Cold Little Heart” being used as the theme song to HBO’s Big Little Lies. Michael recently started getting active again, having announced shows and put out a collaborative song with Tom Misch, and now he has finally announced a new album.
The new album is called KIWANUKA, it comes out October 25 via Interscope (pre-order), and it was produced by Danger Mouse & Inflo, the same team who worked on Love & Hate. The first single is “You Ain’t The Problem,” and going by this song, it seems like Love & Hate was no fluke. It picks up right where that album’s psychedelic blend of rock and soul left off, and it takes a few steps forward too. It’s pretty much the ideal followup single to a career-milestone album like Love & Hate; it scratches the same itch as its predecessor but still sounds fresh. Listen below.
Here’s what Michael has to say about the new LP:
The last album came from an introspective place and felt like therapy, I guess. This one is more about feeling comfortable in who I am and asking what I want to say. Like, how could I be bold and challenge myself and the listener? It is about self-acceptance in a more triumphant rather than melancholy way. It’s an album that explores what it means to be a human being today.
When I first signed a record deal, people would ask me, ‘So what are you going to be called?’. And I never thought of that; calling myself Johnny Thunders or whatever, like singers from the past. So, on this album it’s kind of a defiant thing; I’m engaging with who I am and I’m not going to have an alter ego, or become Sasha Fierce or Ziggy Stardust, even though everyone’s telling me I need to be this, that or the other. I can just be Michael Kiwanuka.
As mentioned, Michael Kiwanuka’s tour hits NYC’s Brooklyn Steel on September 25. That show is now sold out. He also plays three West Coast shows with Gary Clark Jr. All dates are listed below.
