Miguel responds to re-emerged allegations of sexual assault

Months before allegations of sexual assault against Harvey Weinstein led to an outpouring of others coming forward with their own experiences of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry (and beyond), a woman took to social media to describe assault she said she experienced from Miguel. The story went unnoticed by many at the time, but it’s come up again as part of a report from SPIN. In since-deleted Instagram posts from March that have been preserved by The Shade Room, Xian Bass recorded video of herself recounting an incident she says happened when she met Miguel at the Tenants of the Trees venue. In a letter to Miguel in a second Instagram, she wrote:

I approached you respectfully and you still decided my body was not sacred enough to be treated as a human being. After we took this photo, you took it upon yourself to grab my breast and remove it from my shirt WITHOUT CONSENT. You then proceeded to look at my naked breast with such a disgusting look on your face. It’s still embedded in my memory. The sneer of your lip and salivating mouth is making my stomach turn

Speaking to SPIN, Bass says she filed a police report in Barstow, California about the incident. She further explained to SPIN:

“I didn’t want to [file the report] because black lives matter,” said Bass. “I [didn’t] want to because I do not want to put another brown man in jail. I [didn’t] want to because I [didn’t] want to be re-traumatized by going to law enforcement. However, yes, I did. I didn’t want to, but I do know that for other people who may have been abused or assaulted or whatever, maybe this will help them as well.”

While an LAPD officer confirmed to SPIN that the police report had been filed and that there had been an investigation, Bass says she was told that for the investigation to proceed, “other women have to come forward.”

Miguel didn’t deny the allegations outright when confronted about them by TMZ at LAX in March, but he did minimize them and question their validity. “I don’t even feel like that’s a question anyone should ask,” he says in TMZ’s video of their encounter. SPIN‘s request for a follow up interview about the allegations was met by this statement from Miguel’s publicist:

I felt I had already addressed how bizarre and twisted this accusation was when I was asked about it in March. Her story of what transpired is not accurate and the accusation is unfair and unwarranted
