Mike Doughty readies new solo LP (watch the video for "I Can't Believe I Found You in That Town")

Former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty will release his new solo album, The Heart Watches While the Brain Burns, on October 14. He made the album after moving from New York — where he’d lived since the ’80s — to Memphis, TN, working with longtime collaborator Good Goose on tracks over the internet. The title, if you’re wondering, comes from a quote by Marc Maron on his WTF podcast about trying to quit nicotine gum. Pre-orders are available now and artwork and tracklist are below.

The first single from the LP is “I Can’t Believe I Found You in That Town,” a folky number inspired by a failed romantic connection that was written almost in real time as things went south. “Because I wrote it in my head, it has a kind of simple universal-folky chord progression,” says Doughty. “If I was writing it with an instrument in my hands, I would’ve second-guessed and made more complicated. Writing fast and putting it out on the same day eliminates a lot of over-thinking. I love that.” The video for the song was directed by Meg “Uncle Meg” Skaff and shot in Coney Island, depicting a sweet chance encounter. Mike only appears in t-shirt form, and the video premieres in this post. Watch below.

Meanwile, Mike will celebrate The Heart Watches While the Brain Burns at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on October 25. That’s a free show.
