Mike Huckaby, Detroit deep house great, has died

Deep house great Mike Huckaby has died. He was 54. UPDATE: Pitchfork reports he died of complications from a stroke and COVID-19. Fellow Detroit DJ/producer Delano Smith had set up a GoFundMe for Mike in early march, saying he had “suffered a Medical Setback.”

Mike’s roots in Detroit run deep, having worked at the legendary Record Time shop, and he gave back to his city too as an educator, teaching classes on music production at Youthville community learning center. His records were released on such labels as Rick Wade’s Harmonie Park, Berlin’s Tresor and London’s Cross Section, and Mike had his own labels, Deep Transportation and S Y N T H. He DJ’d around the world, and was an in-demand remixer, too.

Rest in peace, Mike. Listen to some of his records and mixes, and read tributes from fellow artists, below
