Mitski expands tour, played Panorama (review)

Mitski just finished up playing some major festivals, including NYC’s Panorama this past weekend. She has now added a run of fall tour dates, including shows with Soccer Mommy, Stef Chura, Pixies and Palehound.

The new dates included a Jersey City show at White Eagle Hall on October 1, and that one’s with Soccer Mommy (tickets). All dates are listed below.

I also caught Mitski’s Panorama set on Saturday afternoon. Calling her set transcendent might be a bit of an overstatement, but as the camera panned over the audience and revealed all the glassy eyes, there was a sense that Mitski’s music is something bigger than the woman behind it. She played a couple of favorites from both last year’s Puberty 2 and 2014’s Bury Me at Makeout Creek, including “Your Best American Girl,” “Happy,” “First Love / Late Spring,” and “Townie.” Mitski remained pretty stoic throughout the set, letting most of the performance’s weight come from the lyrics.

What might have been the most exciting part of the set was also the most pared down, when Mitski announced she would play without her band for “Drunk Walk Home.” Her voice cut through the clamor of being on festival grounds, especially as she told the listener “fuck you and your money,” a line said with so much clarity and distaste, even the security lining the barricade turned around to watch.

The set ended a couple of minutes early, with Mitski thanking the audience and shrugging her shoulders as she walked offstage. It was a short set in the middle of a long weekend, a blip in the greater scheme of the lineup. Even Mitski didn’t seem to be that affected by it. However, for those who were there, it was an emotional respite among the festival’s bustle and movement, a respite much needed.
