Run For Cover Records and Fred Perry threw the sold-out Something in the Way fest at all three rooms of NYC’s Webster Hall last night (12/14), bringing in droves of fans decked out in Run for Cover band merch eagerly waiting in a line that went around the block. Each set ranged from about a half hour to 45 minutes, and the show moved quickly, with no real downtime between bands. It was pretty easy to catch everyone you wanted to though, so it did get pretty packed in the small Studio room (especially for Pinegrove and Alex G).

Crying were the first band to play, taking the Studio stage at 7 PM, and shortly after they started, Teen Suicide kicked things off in the Grand Ballroom. It was just singer Sam Ray playing solo (usually they’re a band), and during his set he asked the crowd to email Run For Cover to renew his contract. (Did you email them??)

Nicole Dollanganger played with a four-piece band (previous shows we’ve seen have had just a bassist and guitarist). Elvis Depressedly had to drop off at the last minute, but their set was replaced by Cat Be Damned (who we missed) and Infinity Crush (who we did catch).

One of the biggest highlights of the night was Pinegrove‘s set. After recently playing Irving Plaza (opening for Kevin Devine), it was nice to see Pinegrove once again in a more intimate setting. Their set was on the shorter side, but they found time to play most of this year’s excellent Cardinal. Pinegrove never disappoint, but this was hands down the best I’ve ever seen them.

The fest ended with Modern Baseball headlining in the Grand Ballroom. After seeing MoBo play in intimate venues like Shea and Baby’s, it felt different to see them in such a big setting, but certainly still great. They limited the amount of Holy Ghost songs for the night and played tons of their older favorites, like “Fine, Great” and “The Weekend”, with fans crowd surfing throughout the whole set. They closed off the set with “Your Graduation” and I don’t think anyone in the room wasn’t singing along.

Pictures from the show are in the gallery above.
