Monster Rally released ‘Mystery Cove’ (watch “Full Sail” video), tells us his Top 10 LPs of 2016

Ted Feighan has been making music as Monster Rally for most of this decade, the kind of crate-digging, cut-and-paste “what’s that sample?” style that is not dissimilar to The Avalanches, but on a more exclusively loungey/tropicalia tip. Monster Rally’s new album, Mystery Cove, was released earlier this, which pairs excellently with a Mai Tai under a palm. He’s just released a video for “Full Sail” which was directed by Nick Ray McCann, and answers the question “What do cat’s dream about?” (The French Open, apparently.) The video premieres in this post and you can watch it, and stream the whole of Mystery Cove, below.

Meanwhile, Ted has offered up his Top 10 LPs of 2016. “These are the records that have been most in my rotation for the better part of this year,” says Ted. “Some are new, some are a few years old a some are decades old.” Check out his list below.

Monster Rally’s Top 10 of 2016
These are the records that have been most in my rotation for the better part of this year. Some are new, some are a few years old a some are decades old. Some of these albums, like The Infamous or Soul Sauce, I’ve been familiar with for years, but somehow they made their way into my daily and weekly listening this past year. Possibly the most important musical discovery I’ve made since moving to Los Angeles was The Art Laboe Connection. This is a radio show that plays 6 nights a week nationally, but when the station that airs it locally (Hot 92.3fm) was purchased last year and made into a hip-hop channel I stopped hearing all the great music he played. Eventually I sought it out myself and found some great Art Laboe-inspired playlists on Spotify that I’ve been listening to all this year.

In no particular order:
• Rumtum – Mora Toga

• Allah Las – Calico Review

• Mild High Club – Skiptracing

• NxWorries – Yes Lawd!

• Art Laboe Oldies Playlist

• Cal Tjader – Soul Sauce
