Monsters of Folk planning new LP & tour; Jim James shares video, covered Mazzy Star with Twin Limb

It’s been 7 years since the Monsters of Folk album, which of course unites premiere indie-folk talents Jim James, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and M. Ward, and while things had been quiet aside from some vague news about new music and brief onstage reunions, we’ve now learned that a new album (and a movie!) have been in the works for quite some time. In a recent Reddit AMA, Jim James disclosed that the group has indeed been working on a new album for the past couple years, and that it’s based on a movie script that Conor Oberst wrote. From Jim himself:

we started another monsters of folk record a few years ago, for a screenplay that conor wrote for a monsters of folk film, we hope both happen someday, cuz we wanna write music for the film, but its tough to get a weird film made these days! maybe someday!

Meanwhile, Jim shared a new video for his Eternally Even track “Here in Spirit.” It’s a lovely, melancholy video that shouts out Black Lives Matter and takes a hopeful, compassionate tone to combat these troubled post-election times. You can watch it here.

Jim also just kicked off his tour with Twin Limb behind that album, which hits NYC this weekend at Terminal 5 on November 20. Tickets for that are still on sale.

Twin Limb shared a live video from one of the earlier shows on the tour where they covered Mazzy Star‘s “Fade Into You” with Jim’s help. You can watch that here:

Meanwhile, Monsters of Folk band member and screenwriter Conor Oberst is also playing shows of his own behind his new album, and you can still win tickets to see him in NYC at Carnegie Hall on November 23. Or you can buy them.
