Mountain Goats fans petition for John Darnielle to be Poet Laureate; Mountain Goats playing NYC (including 1 free show)
The Mountain Goats @ Vic Theatre, Chicago, October 2012 (more by Sara Pieper)
John Darnielle is an American institution. An inspiration to poets, artists and sundry other human beings both in America and world-wide, Mr. Darnielle is a unique voice in modern word and music. For over twenty years, Mr. Darnielle has struggled on our behalf to come to terms with the base instincts of the human psyche. In literature, there is no man more worthy of recognition through the award of U.S. Poet Laureate than John Darnielle.
So do it, Mr. President. Do it!
Do you think Mountain Goats‘ John Darnielle would make a good United States Poet Laureate? If so, you can sign the official White House petition, which needs to get 25,000 “signatures” by January 25. (They are at 3,357 as of this posting.) John also contributed a list of “TOP FIVE GENRES OF 2012 IN JOHN DARNIELLE’S KITCHEN” to Pitchfork’s end-of-year “Guestlist” feature and those genres are Opera, Heavy Metal, Classical, “Goblin Worship,” and “New Age” and you can read his lengthy explanations of each over their way.
The Mountain Goats have a couple NYC shows coming up. The first is on January 15 at Carnegie Hall as part of an event called “John and Hank Green: An Evening of Awesome” which is presented by YouTube sensations Vlogbrothers. The show appears to be sold out but tickets may be available by calling the box office. The show will also be streaming live on the Vlogbrothers’ YouTube channel.
UPDATE: The next night (1/16), Darnielle will be performing at Studio-X in SoHo as part of GQ and FSG’s Originals Series that also features author Frank Bill and host David Rees. The show is free and you can get tickets here.
