music doc roundup: Justin Timberlake / Jonathan Demme, Rolling Stones, CREEM mag & more

The music documentary business has been booming lately, but aside from the seemingly limitless stuff available for music geeks on Netflix (watch Jaco if you haven’t yet), there’s a bunch of stuff in the works to get excited about.

We heard about a couple of those with the announcement of the Toronto International Film Festival lineup today. First off, legendary filmmaker Jonathan Demme , who directed Stop Making Sense, has a new concert film in the works and this time the subject is Justin Timberlake. JT + The Tennessee Kids documents the closing stops of the 20/20 Experience tour in Las Vegas.

Elsewhere at TIFF, the British documentarian Paul Dugdale, who has directed concert films for Ed Sheeran and One Direction, has a new Rolling Stones documentary set to premiere. Ole Ole Ole! follows the Stones across their Latin American tour that culminated in a show in Havana earlier this year.

The whole TIFF lineup, which is stacked as always and includes Christopher Guest’s new ensemble mockumentary, Mascots, and Nick Cannon’s directorial debut, King of the Dancehall, can be checked out here.

And as the world turns, so there are more Rolling Stones documentaries in the works. Legendary British filmmaker Julien Temple has a Keith Richards-centric doc on the way, titled Origin of the Species, that focuses heavily on Keith’s pre-Stones life that he discussed most memorably in his autobiography. That one is premiering on BBC TV this week and should hopefully be available for US audiences soon.

Meanwhile, there’s a documentary going down about Marvin Gaye. Marvin, What’s Goin’ On? will follow the making of Gaye’s seminal, titular Motown album through the lens of the historic cultural change going on at the time. That one heads into production this year.

Speaking of Marvin Gaye‘s story, it’s not a documentary, but Motown: The Musical is back on Broadway for a limited time, and by limited time we mean it just opened and is sadly already closing after just two weeks (it was originally supposed to be open for months). Based partially on Berry Gordy‘s autobiography To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, the 50+ song jukebox musical tells the story of the Motown record label (from Berry’s point of view) with actors playing Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and more (the last NYC performance for this run will be 7/31).

And speaking of Detroit (Motown and such), there’s now a teaser and a Kickstarter Page for an upcoming documentary on the legendary Detroit-based, Lester Bangs-fronted music publication Creem Magazine. That teaser features Alice Cooper, Thurston Moore and others talking about the magazine. Check it out below.

And in terms of stuff that’s already out and screening in theaters in NYC, today (7/26) is your last day to catch the excellent Frank Zappa doc Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in his Own Words at Film Forum. And the Sharon Jones documentary Miss Sharon Jones! is at IFC Center all week.
