Natalie Prass streaming new LP, touring, playing The Strand

Natalie Prass‘ sophomore album The Future and The Past isn’t officially out until next Friday (6/1), but the album is streaming a week early, via NPR First Listen. The new record shows Natalie bringing her sound into much funkier territory, inspired by ’80s/’90s R&B and dance from the likes of Mariah Carey, Talking Heads, and Prince, as teased by excellent singles “Short Court Style” and “Sisters.” Here’s more words from NPR:

The Future and The Past could be an on-the-nose title if the album didn’t sound so … current. With interplay between old sounds and new technologies, a blurring of the personal and the political, and, of course, a stylistic evolution from Prass herself, this new album neither absolves us of the past it decries or lays a blueprint for the future it hopes for. But it does make the here and now sound a whole lot groovier.

You can stream the album in full HERE, and watch the video for “Short Court Style” below.

Natalie’s North American tour begins this week, which includes a sold-out show at NYC’s Rough Trade on June 1. Before that, she has an upcoming record party sponsored by The Talkhouse at NYC bookstore The Strand’s Rare Book Room on May 29 where she’ll perform a few songs and discuss the record with album collaborator Matthew E. White. Admission is free with purchase of the new album on vinyl. Natalie will also be opening for Rhye at Prospect Park on July 7 as part of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn.
