Nellie McKay played Joe's Pub (pics), singing 'Popeye' in NYC ++ other shows

“Welcome to Joe’s Pub! What a shithole!” That’s how Nellie McKay, referencing our President, greeted the crowd for her Joe’s Pub show on Monday (1/15) which was part of this year’s APAP industry conference as well as The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival. Also on the bill were Lowland Hum (aka husband and wife duo, Daniel and Lauren Goans) who had just gotten back from a European tour. “I didn’t believe in jetlag,” said Daniel…till now. Pictures from the show are in the gallery above.

Nellie has a couple other NYC shows on her upcoming schedule, including City Vineyard on February 16 as part of the venue’s intimate Voices on the Hudson Series where there are only 100 seats sold (tickets). She’s also performing at Feinstein’s 54 Below on April 11 where she and Daryl Glenn will perform a tribute to Robert Altman & Harry Nilsson’s musical Popeye which sounds like a lot of fun:

Together at last, Daryl (Daryl Glenn & Jo Lynn Burks sing Robert Altman’s Nashville, Daryl sings Steve: Songs by Sondheim) and Nellie (The Threepenny Opera on Broadway, A Girl Named Bill: The Life and Times of Billy Tipton) perform the songs from Robert Altman’s notorious 1980 movie musical Popeye. The quirky yet glorious score is by legendary singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson (“Everybody’s Talkin’”) and features the beloved tune, “He Needs Me”. With musical directors Karen Dryer, Ben McNaboe and very special guest stars Jay Rogers and Lennie Watts it’s a fun-filled, joyous evening not to be missed.

Tickets for the Popeye tribute are on sale. Nellie’s got other dates around the U.S. as well. All are listed below.
