Nelly accuser drops charges, believes "the system is going fail her"

The woman who accused Nelly of raping her after a concert in Auburn, WA early this month has told authorities she will now not testify against Nelly and wants them to “put a halt” to the criminal investigation. “We do not live in a society where a 21 year old college student can feel safe enough to pursue criminal charges against a celebrity for an alleged rape,” Karen Koehler, the accuser’s lawyer, wrote in an open letter. “Every step of the way since the time she called 911, she wishes she had not. Not because what happened didn’t occur exactly the way she described it. Not because she did not want the police to charge the celebrity with alleged rape. She wishes she had not called 911 because the system is going to fail her…One day, maybe our world will change and thirty women will not be needed to (eventually) speak out against a celebrity who has hurt them in order to be believed. But that day has not yet come.” Read the whole letter below.

The New York Times reports that the Auburn Police Depart investigation is currently still ongoing. “We’re not going to just halt the investigation,” Commander Steve Stocker said. “We’re still investigating the case, and it’s probably going to be referred to the prosecutor’s office sometime next week.”

Nelly (Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) has maintained his innocence and a representative called this “welcome news” in a statement. Meanwhile, Nelly’s tour with Florida Georgia Line has rolled on.
