After a lengthy absence from music, Neneh Cherry returned in 2014 with Blank Project, which she made with Four Tet, and then they worked together again on Broken Politics, which came out back in October. She’s always done things her way, including not really touring — her first-ever NYC show was 2015, and she didn’t return until Sunday (12/2) for a show presenting Broken Politics at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust. Her backing band included two DJs and a harpist, among other members, and the new album was the main focus of the set. After playing the lion’s share of Broken Politics (including “Synchronized Devotion,” which she dedicated to her father Ahmadu, who died this year), she gave the crowd “Manchild” from her classic debut Raw Like Sushi, and then a cover of Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” (which was a single for the Red Hot + Blue compilation), before ending things with her worldwide hit “Buffalo Stance” (in a radical, jazzy new arrangement).
