London Town

new coming-of-age film 'London Town' set amid '70s British punk scene (watch the trailer)

The upcoming film London Town, directed by Derrick Borte, is a drama set amid the thriving London punk scene of the late 70s. Here’s the full synopsis:

When fifteen-year-old Shay (Daniel Huttlestone) hears the music of The Clash for the first time, it’s a revelation, opening up a new world of social consciousness and anti-establishment defiance beyond anything he’s known in his dead-end London suburb. Drawn into the heart of the city’s burgeoning punk scene, he forges two relationships that will change his life, falling in love with rebellious cool girl Vivian (Nell Williams) and finding an unexpected connection with none other than The Clash’s electrifying frontman, Joe Strummer (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Propelled by a blistering soundtrack that bounces from The Clash to The Ramones to Buzzcocks, London Town captures the sound and spirit of a scene that shook the world.

Starring Daniel Huttlestone, Dougray Scott, Natascha McElhone and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (who already kinda played Bowie in Velvet Goldmine 18 years ago) as Joe Strummer, the coming-of-punk-age film looks like it could be a lot of fun for fans of that era of music. The soundtrack features a ton of good stuff, with the Buzzcocks, Psychedelic Furs, Stiff Little Fingers, and of course plenty of The Clash (as well as some Clash covers sung by members of the cast).

The film opens in NYC and LA on October 7 — in NYC it’s at the IFC Center (tickets). Check out the trailer, and watch a scene where The Clash play “Clash City Rockers,” below.
